Pre-wiring a home theater isn't complicated. But it does require thinking ahead: which cables go where, what conduit to use, how much slack to leave, and what you'll wish you'd planned for five years from now. Why Pre-Wiring Is a Decision, Not a Step

Most people treat wiring as the last thing they think about. It's actually the first thing you should plan, especially in new construction or a major renovation.

Once your walls are closed, your options shrink dramatically. Running new cables through finished drywall is doable — but it's slow, expensive, and sometimes impossible without cutting into walls. Doing it right during the build phase costs almost nothing extra in labor and materials compared to retrofitting later.

The goal of pre-wiring isn't just to install today's cables. It's to make tomorrow's upgrades easy.

The Cables Your Home Theater Actually Needs

Before you start pulling wire, you need to know what goes where. Here's a breakdown of the cable types used in a proper home theater pre-wire.

Speaker Wire

For most home theaters, 14 AWG two-conductor copper wire covers the majority of runs under 50 feet. Go up to 12 AWG for longer runs — anything over 80 feet — or for subwoofer lines where signal loss matters more.

For most in-wall and in-ceiling work, ENT (Electrical Non-metallic Tubing) — the blue flexible conduit — is the easiest to work with and code-compliant for low-voltage applications. For longer straight runs or areas exposed to damage, ½ inch or ¾ inch EMT (metallic) gives you more protection and easier pulls.

Pre-Wiring the Room: A Step-by-Step Approach


1. Map Your Equipment Locations First

Before you pull a single cable, draw out your room. Mark the exact position of your display (TV mount height and stud spacing), projector (if ceiling-mounted), equipment rack or AV cabinet, and each speaker location.

Speaker positions for a 5.1 system: front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right, subwoofer. For 7.1, add rear surrounds. For Atmos, add ceiling or height speaker locations.


2. Identify Your Home Run Location

All cables eventually need to terminate somewhere — your AV rack or equipment cabinet. This is your "home run" location. Every wire should route back here, ideally through a single chase or bundle point.

If you're building a dedicated theater room, consider a small closet or alcove specifically for your rack. This keeps heat, fan noise, and cable clutter out of the viewing space.

Install a dedicated control wire (18/2 or 22/4 shielded) from your rack to your display location for IR distribution or RS-232 control. If you ever add a smart home system or universal remote, you'll have the infrastructure already in place.

Run fiber alongside copper if your budget allows. Fiber is future-proof in ways copper simply isn't — it doesn't degrade over distance, carries enormous bandwidth, and is immune to electromagnetic interference.
